The Surgical Hospitalist Program was created to handle emergent consults and operations in the middle of the workday so as to not conflict with the on-call general surgeon’s previous commitments to elective clinic and elective operations.
The advantages of this hospital-based surgeon include consults seen in a timely fashion and operated on without delay due to conflicts with elective scheduling.
Services include:
- Providing an immediate point person to discuss urgent consults and potential referrals and transfers with general surgical problems.
- Providing Level II trauma coverage and overseeing of the care of a multiply injured patient.
- Freeing up the other general surgeons in the practice to see elective consults (i.e., patients with breast cancer), in a more timely fashion.
