 Brian Flones, Superintendent of Wenatchee School District, talked with us about the district.
Education and Enrichment: We offer a very well rounded full educational experience for students. We have a strong core academic program at all levels - elementary, middle school and high school - and we offer a lot of additional enrichment activities as an enhancement to their education. Whether their interest lies in English, history or the arts, we have a solid enrichment program throughout the district. We have a half time enrichment specialist at every elementary school and every middle school. We have an enrichment model at the high school that has an independent study component for students to do projects that are interesting to them and get credit.
We offer a journalism program and we have a school newspaper. They’ve received the top awards in journalism in the state and national recognition the last two years in a row.
Our sports medicine program is one of the strongest in the country. It’s amazing.
Advanced Placement: We put a really strong emphasis on AP. My goal is to expand a class each year - I’ll get it into every subject area that we can. I think this year we had 298 exams taken by 219 students, which is the highest we’ve ever had.
For the last two years we’ve been working really hard, we’ve put a lot of resources into it. There’s an AP index that they use. It’s the index that they use for the top high schools in the country. Our goal is to get to a 1.0 AP index. Last year we were .52, and this year I think we’re closer to .8. Within the next couple of years we want to be 1.1 or higher. That index is an indicator of the rigor and the standard of quality at the high school. [click here for more info on the AP Index]
Next year we’re adding additional AP classes in English and in Statistics. We’re also looking at adding to our Foreign Language as well the following year. [As part of] the focus on improving those opportunities for high end students, we created some pre-AP classes in science, chemistry and biology, pre-AP biology and chemistry.
